Aashayein - The beginning

Aashayein was initiated in March 2006, after several site visits in Timarpur slum area by AID volunteers. Before this project we were wondering how we can tap potential student community in the north campus of Delhi University. Initially, we contacted our friends (Aparna, Sudipta and others who knew about AID) staying in the north campus, and then we had several volunteer meetings in a PG hostel. As a part of her PhD in Anthropology, one of our contacts, Mridula, had worked for a community in Timarpur area. We visited the Timarpur area to understand the need of the underprivileged community. We found highly interested and motivated people in the community who wanted us to start a community development initiative. One of them told us that we are the first bunch of people to think for their welfare, so they will cooperate with us in every possible way. Gradually, after several interactions with the community and amongst the volunteers, we felt that there is a genuine case for helping this community and decided to start Aashayein. This project has seen many ups and downs, but still continues to run due to the perseverance of volunteers.

Our project site is very close to Delhi University north campus, mukherjee nagar, model town, vijay nagar, kingsway camp, kamla nagar and roop nagar. If you stay in these localities or somehwhere closeby, you may visit our project by emailing us at aid.delhi@gmail.com
